VDSL broadband is the best copper network available in New Zealand. Its internet speeds are worlds away from ADSL broadband - the other copper connection in NZ. If you’re located within 1200 metres from the cabinet, you can experience faster average speeds of 70Mbps download and 10Mbps upload. While not as fast as a fibre connection, it’s an excellent alternative for those unable to make the switch to fibre yet.
Currently, VDSL broadband is available in 60% of NZ however, the Rural Broadband Initiative is looking to install more and more cabinets in many more areas throughout the country. This helps reach more people access a faster copper network for browsing. The installation will only take a few minutes, especially if VDSL broadband lines are already installed in your area.
If this is the best option in your area, you can then find the best deals by comparing VDSL broadband plans by comparing providers using our comparison tool here at glimp.

DSL technology is primarily limited by the quality and the length of the copper cables used by the company, which now affects the speed of the broadband connection. To solve this, VDSL broadband connections reduce the cable length via an optical node much closer to the user’s home while using fibre optics to connect the node to the service provider while the node still uses telephone wires to connect to the user’s home. This node is then installed much closer to the user’s point of installation, shortening the needed telephone wires and greatly improving connection speeds.
Thanks to its newer technology in relation to the old ADSL connection, VDSL speeds are faster, making it a better choice for businesses and even for standard use. The technology was designed to better support common internet uses such as high definition TV, media streaming and VoIP connections granting it good versatility. It’s also available across a wider area too, making it a great choice for people unable to get fast fibre for their homes.
Heaps faster! Compared to ADSL, VDSL speeds can reach up to 70Mbps for download and around 10Mbps for upload. However, speeds may still vary depending on different conditions, such as the copper cables and the distance from the nearest cabinet. For VDSL broadband plans, the closer you are to the cabinet - the better.
This will depend on whether or not the fibre is already installed at your address. If it is, most providers should be able to get you up and running the next day at the earliest. On the other hand, physical work will be needed if the fibre is not yet installed so expect a couple of weeks for the installation.
When it comes to shopping for a compatible modem for your VDSL broadband connection, you have to look at a number of factors. First, look at the speed and range that they’re capable of providing in order to avoid bottlenecking your connection. After that, you can look at the other features. Ethernet ports, USB ports, or even WiFi capabilities will vary from model to model so make sure you do your due diligence beforehand.
If you can get both at your address, then fibre is the way to go. Unlike VDSL broadband, fibre uses fibre optic cabling instead of copper. This gives speeds that are much more consistent and faster. Fibre is a little trickier to install than a copper connection, but it’s worth the trade-off for the speeds and convenience.

Filomena had amazing customer service! She was very polite and respectful. She also was great at listening to my needs and offering solutions with options that had great savings. I would give her 10 stars if that was an option. If I decide to go ahead I would choose to go have her help me again. I have not had the best experience in the past with customer service reps so I would like to thank her for making this experience a good one. Kind Regards, Selena

Philomena was efficient, patient and helpful. She had good data at hand to provide me with comparisons between what was offered and my current costs. She did a good job
Thanks for the call and check in. You recommended I stay with my current provider as the rates were top notch. I'll touch base again in the next 12-18 months, you made it super easy. Great friendly and confident salesperson.
Very clear and concise information. Great price comparison for saving money on our monthly bills! Thanks Issac and Glimp! I can't wait to pass these savings on to my hard working family Adding onto my review as I think this is totally unacceptable to have people call you about switching companies and you agree to change and go through the process with Glimp and then get phone calls from supposed companies BEFORE you even get the email offer from supposed companies.
